International Students in France: A Profitable Investment

In today’s France, the students’ immigration has emerged as a heated debate, mainly because it has both negative and positive impacts. We should always keep in mind that France and Germany are the two largest economies in Europe, although France is still suffering from rising unemployment, broke companies and decreasing ratio of exports.

However, the State is facing what the media describe as the chief concern, regardless of feasible way out available e.g. Students’ immigration. In fact, France tends to be among the top three nations, which attract a large number of foreign students belonging to different countries and regions. The United Kingdom and United States are well ahead than France.

As revealed by an OECD report, there are around 300,000 foreign students studying in French colleges and universities at the moment, and the ratio has been on the rise in last two decades. While many of international students belong to the African countries, they collectively represent over 40% of international, but non-EU students. Contributing €1.6bn to French economy, 10% of these young learners belongs to South and North America, and nearly 24% of them belongs to Middle East and Asian regions.

Belonging to the non-EU nations, international students need to take care of the Prefecture de Police to acquire a provisional residence permit, called Titre de Séjour. However, international students find this mandatory process as something unnecessarily prolonged and unfriendly. This process is coming out to be a source of frustration for the international students.

Furthermore, the non-European students are officially banned to access any kind of employment in France after completing their university courses. As a result, the struggling French economy is being affected adversely. Recently, UK has also implemented the same measures, but the overall impact is quite negative not only for the international students, but also for the international students.
